The Canberra Raiders’ Jersey Flegg team will head into the weekend full of confidence when they come up against league leaders Penrith Panthers at McDonald’s stadium midday this Saturday.

The team enter the clash off the back of a 56-4 victory over the Manly Sea Eagles last weekend, with Matthew Timoko, Kyle Paterson and Harley Smith-Shields all getting doubles.

The Panthers head into the match after a 42-0 victory over the Rabbitohs in Round 7.

Raiders coach Ash Barnes said that this win has been building and has highlighted the continuing defensive improvement as an important factor during last week’s win.

“There were different stages in that second half where the boys could’ve given up another try,” said Barnes. “They really showed a lot of resilience to continuously turn up and defend their line.”

Jarret Subloo returned to the starting line-up after a quad injury, with Barnes saying he was happy to have a full strength halves partnership for the first time since Round 1.

“We were able to be quite a threat across the field,” said Barnes. “Going forward, those combinations between Subloo, Wescott and Kyle Paterson will continue to build… it’s really pleasing.”

The Raiders side came through injury-free after their victory, with Barnes planning to name a very similar side for Round 8’s match in what is one that the coach and the players are ‘very looking forward to’.

The Raiders will hope to stop a rampant Panthers side this weekend and continue their push for the top eight when the two clubs face off this weekend at McDonald’s Park in Wagga Wagga at 12:45 pm.
