The Yass Magpies will have to wait the extra week for their 2022 Canberra Raiders Cup debut as they have the bye in round one. Nonetheless they are excited, confident and ready to go as they have their eyes set on a top four finish.
Yass had a disappointing finish to their 2021 campaign, finishing seventh on the ladder at the competition's abandonment after 15 rounds due to Covid-19.
The Magpies unfortunately lost three games by less than a six-point margin and also drew two matches last season. Yass backrower Benjamin Davis addressed this when speaking to CRRL media.
"Last year, we fell short a couple of times. So coming into this year, we’re really looking at being able to push through 80 minutes of footy and closing out a game,” Davis said.
We need to improve on our completion rate, that really killed us last year. We stuck it to teams a lot for 40 minutes and then our completion rate went out the window, we slacked off and we let teams straight back into the contest. We’ve just got to close out that 80 minutes," Davis added.
Yass Katrina Fanning Shield player Kristy Huey touched on their battle with rivals Goulburn for the minor premiership last year, and how they prepare for the 2022 season.
“We’re hoping we can be on top again. But we have a lot of work to do, a lot of new girls and changes," Huey said.
We’re just really working on making every game count, and every game matter to us. We really think that’s important. We really like our team dynamic as well as our skills. We like to be a team with a great attitude.”
Yass will play their first game in round two of the CRC, when they host the Woden Valley Rams at Walker Park on Saturday April 9th.
