Round 13 of the Blumers Lawyers Canberra Raiders Cup is in the books, with the Bushrangers, Warriors, Blues and Bulldogs all picking up important wins over the weekend.
Tuggeranong Bushrangers 30 d Woden Valley Rams 16
The Tuggeranong Bushrangers have pulled themselves closer to the top three after a strong 30-16 win over the Rams at Greenway Oval on Saturday afternoon.
It didn’t take long for the home side to get across the line with halfback Liam Oakley putting up a beautifully weighted kick to the left corner for winger Jack Davison to fly through and score the opening try of the game.
Tuggeranong followed up their first try with two more to extend themselves out to an 18-0 lead until the Rams scored their first in the 28th minute.
The Rams needed a big second half to try and steal this game after going into the break down 22-4,
The Rams didn’t disappoint, scoring a length of the field try in the opening minutes of the second half.
But in the end the Bushrangers were too good, holding on to win by 14 points.
Tuggeranong will host Yass in round 14 while the Rams will have the tough task of trying to defeat the Warriors in Belconnen.
West Belconnen Warriors 22 d Belconnen United Sharks 18
The West Belconnen Warriors have kept their spot atop the competition ladder after winning the Belconnen derby 22-18 at NSWRL HQ in Bruce on Saturday afternoon.
In a close contest, the Warriors were able to fight their way back after being down 12-nil after 30 minutes to walk away with the four point victory.
It was an error and penalty riddled game which saw both sides struggle to gain any momentum during periods of the match. Both sides made double-digit errors with the Sharks winning the penalty count 10 to 7.
After controlling the game for majority of the first half, the Sharks came up with some crucial errors just before halftime, gifting the Warriors two late tries to head into halftime all locked up at 12-all.
But the Warriors showed just how strong of a side they are, getting out to a ten-point lead midway through the second half.
The Sharks were able to score late to make it an interesting final few minutes, but West Belconnen held on to secure the win.
The Sharks will look to bounce back in round 14 against Gungahlin while the Warriors will host Woden Valley on Sunday afternoon.
Queanbeyan Blues 50 d Gungahlin Bulls 24
The Queanbeyan Blues clocked their sixth 40-plus point score this season in their big victory over Gungahlin at Seiffert oval on Saturday.
In true Blues fashion, Queanbeyan ran out to a 20-point lead in the first 30 minutes until Gungahlin finally found the line just before halftime.
Gungahlin came out in the second half with a clear intent to play a more free-style brand of footy which worked to help them score three tries before the 60th minute.
But the Blues were too good, running away with the victory to keep them second on the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder with five rounds to go.
Gungahlin will look to bounce back against Belconnen United at home this weekend while the Blues face their crosstown rivals in the Kangaroos at Seears Workwear Oval.
Goulburn City Bulldogs 36 d Yass Magpies 22
Goulburn City have kept themselves within striking distance of the top four after a comeback 14 point win over the Yass Magpies at Walker Park on Saturday afternoon.
It was a tight first eight minutes until Yass halfback Joshua Fattore showed his brilliance with a right foot step and short pass to his right to put the Magpies on the board first.
The two teams exchanged tries through the first 40 minutes with Yass’ successful conversion attempts the only difference at halftime with the score reading 12-8 in favour of the Magpies.
But the second half did not go to plan for Yass with Goulburn running in four straight tries to take a 28-12 lead after 55 minutes.
It was always going to be tough from there for Yass with the Bulldogs holding on to take a 36-22 win.
Goulburn will have next weekend off due to the bye, but Yass will have a tough task against the Bushrangers in Tuggeranong on Saturday.
