Katrina Fanning Shield: Week Two Finals Wrap

The Yass Magpies have booked an early ticket to the Katrina Fanning Shield grand final with the Rams and Bulldogs set to play off in this weekend's prelim.

The Harden Worhawks were crowned premiers of the division two competition after their tight win over South Coast on Saturday afternoon.

Div 1 - Major Semi-final

Yass Magpies 14 d Goulburn City Bulldogs 10

The Yass Magpies have secured the first spot in the Katrina Fanning Shield grand final after defeating Goulburn City 14-10 at Raiders Belconnen on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies who have been the standout side in the competition this season, were off to a bumpy start in the major semi-final, with winger Sophie Gaynor being sin-binned in the sixth minute.

The Bulldogs took no time to capitalise, scoring two tackles later through Carly Wilkin to give them an early 4-nil lead.

But Yass were resilient and scored the next couple before halftime to steal the lead and find themselves up 10-4 at the break.

The top side suffered another sin-binning early in the second half, but managed to extend their lead during that ten minute period with Gaynor making up for her earlier ill-discipline.

Goulburn ended Yass’s scoring streak in the 60th minute with five-eighth Lauren Kelly stepping her way to the line.

However it was too late for the Bulldogs with Yass holding on to win 14-10.

Yass will have the week off before the grand final while Goulburn get a second chance and will face Woden Valley in the prelim final.

Div 1 - Minor Semi-final

Woden Valley Rams 26 d Queanbeyan Blues 14

The Woden Valley Rams have kept their hopes of winning the Katrina Fanning Shield alive following their 12-point victory over Queanbeyan at Greenway Oval on Saturday.

It wasn’t an easy win for the Rams, as the Blues jumped out to a 10-nil lead in just as many minutes to start the game.

But Woden answered back to level the game going into halftime after a couple of brilliant tries through captain Irene Macarthur and a 60-metre run from five-eighth Eloise Ryan.

The two sides exchanged tries to begin the second half but it was all Woden Valley from there, with the Rams running in two late tries to seal the victory.

The loss means the end of an impressive season from the Blues, while Woden will continue their quest to secure the shield when they take on Goulburn at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval this Sunday.

Div 2 - Grand Final

Harden Worhawks 10 d South Coast United 4

The Harden Worhawks have upset South Coast United to take out the division two grand final by six points on Saturday afternoon at Mick Sherd Oval.

After finishing second last at the end of the regular season and having won only the solo match all year, the Worhawks stunned the home side, never trailing through the 60 minutes of action.

It was a tight contest for a majority of the opening half with a spectacular run from Harden’s Ua Ravu setting up the first try of the match for Mollie Hogan in the 28th minute.

The Worhawks scored the first try of the second half as well but this time it was Hogan’s relentless effort to get close to the line that opened up a gap for Ravu to score.

South Coast’s Bree-Anne Moreton scored the lonesome four-pointer for her side in the 40th minute but neither team could add to their total with Harden holding on to take the victory.

Although this wasn’t how South Coast planned to end their season, it has still been a solid debut campaign winning six of their 13 games.

For Harden, this will be an enormous confidence boost where they will look to push up the ladder and threat the top sides in season 2023.
