Joseph Tapine and Score Raiders nominated for 2022 CBR Sports Award

Raiders star Joe Tapine and the Score Raiders program have been nominated for 2022 CBR Sports Awards.

The finalists for the CBR Sport Awards 2022 were announced today, recognising outstanding teams and individual athletes, and highlighting the incredible local sporting talent and the diverse range of sports in which Canberra athletes excel.

The awards will be held on Friday, 25 November. Tickets can be purchased to attend at www.cbrsportawards.com.au

Tapine has been nominated for Male Athlete of the year, while the Score Raiders program (Canberra Region Rugby League) has been nominated for the Minister for Sport and Recreation award.

Tapine’s extraordinary season commenced back in February when he had the opportunity to represent his heritage, when he was named Captain of the Maori All-Stars for the clash against the Indigenous All-Stars at CommBank Stadium in Sydney.

During this performance Tapine asserted himself on the field, winning the Preston Campbell Medal for the best player on the field in his side’s 16-10 victory.

He then continued his form into the start of the NRL season, where he quickly established himself as one of the leading forwards in the NRL. By the end of the regular season Tapine sat amongst the best statistically, leading the league in post-contact metres, was second in off-loads, third in most metres ran and sixth in all-runs.

His contributions for the Canberra Raiders allowed the team to secure a position in the 2022 Finals series, where the side made it through to week two of the finals.

During the season Tapine was selected for New Zealand in the Pacific Test match against Tonga, where New Zealand was victorious 26-6 at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland.

Tapine dominated the voting for the Canberra Raiders most prestigious award the Meninga Medal, polling a staggering 44 votes across the season, 22 more than his closest rival.

His wonderful season also included selection in the Rugby League Players Association Dream Team, which is voted by his fellow NRL players across the league. He was also selected in the Dally M team of the year at the end of season Dally M Medal awards.

Tapine’s remarkable season has continued as he represents the Kiwi’s at the Rugby League World Cup.

The Canberra Raiders and Canberra Region Rugby League in partnership with The Disability Trust have created the Score Raiders program that sees rugby league players with an Intellectual and Physical disability play as a team in the local CRRL juniors’ competition.

This modified two-handed touch game provides both a physical outlet for the Score Raiders players well-being but just as importantly, has junior rugby league players at 14 and 15 years of age interacting and competing against the Score Raiders.

It is a life experience for many of the players that they previously have not had access to.

The Score Raiders program has grown from 10 players to 30 players over the last 4 years and Canberra Raiders players come to assist with training and build relationships with the Score players in the program.

The program teaches resilience and supports physical activity and mental well-being for the Score group whilst also having our teenagers engage and build relationships with the Score players.

The Canberra Raiders facilitates the opportunity for the Score Raiders to play at major venues such as GIO Stadium (playing Score Dragons and Yass Under 15s) and at WIN Stadium also against the Score Dragons.

The season finished with a Grand Final against Yass which was played at Phillip Oval on Juniors Grand Final Day and was warmly received.
