Junior Reps Preview Round Two 2023

All three junior representative teams travel to Henson Park this weekend, with the Tarsha Gale Cup side kicking off their 2023 campaign while the SG Ball and Harold Matthews teams look to continue their winning ways.

Tarsha Gale Cup

After a bye in round one, the Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup side start their 2023 campaign against the Indigenous Academy Roosters on Saturday afternoon.

There has been plenty of growth in the side this year, with the incoming Raiders NRLW team providing an elite level for young players to work towards.

There were 42 girls that started the Raiders Tarsha Gale pre-season in November, compared to 30 the previous year.

Raiders coach Josh Hardy has been impressed with the pre-season efforts, with 12 players set to make their debut in green on Saturday.

“Preparations have been going alright, we’ve had some mixed results in our trials but that’s come back to trialing a number of combinations," Hardy said.

"We’re looking forward to this weekend, we are going to have 12 debutants in Raiders colours so that’s exciting especially in the female space and the NRLW."

This year's squad features players from all over Canberra and the surrounding regions, but Hardy says that the team is the tightest knit he's been a part of.

“Yeah we are pretty mixed, we’ve got some girls from down the coast at Narooma and Ulladulla, we’ve got a handful of girls from Harden, we’ve got a young girl from Wombat which is just outside of Young, so yeah we’ve got a big mix of locations," Hardy said.

“In my four years being involved in Tarsha Gale, this is the tightest knit squad that I’ve had even with them coming from a wide array of locations. They are a close knit group and hopefully that replicates to something on the field.”

The Raiders side take on the Indigenous Academy Roosters, who won the Tarsha Gale competition last year. They defeated the Parramatta Eels in round one last weekend.

Hardy says that defence will be a major focus this weekend for his side.

“They are the defending premiers for a reason and they’ve started the comp off well beating Parramatta. So yeah staying patient, defending well and taking opportunities when they come up [is the main focus]," Hardy said.

Kick off for the match is 3pm on Saturday 11th February at Henson Park in Sydney.

SG Ball Cup

The Raiders SG Ball Cup side take on the Sydney Roosters this Saturday as they look to make it two straight wins to start the season.

The Raiders started their season in style last weekend with a dominant 66-0 victory over the Melbourne Storm.

The side’s attack was impressive throughout the match, running in twelve tries. Chevy Stewart scored a hat-trick in the win, while captain Owen Hromow scored a double.

There have been a couple of changes to the team ahead of this weekend’s clash. Samuel Gash has been named to start on the wing, with Keahn Skipps named as five-eighth.

Niu Mariota replaces Vena Patuki Case in the starting front row.

The Roosters were narrowly defeated 28-22 by the Parramatta Eels in round one, so will be looking to bounce back this weekend.

The round two clash starts at 1:30pm on Saturday 11th February at Henson Park, Sydney.

Harold Matthews Cup

The Raiders Harold Matthews Cup side also take on the Sydney Roosters as they look to back up their round one win.

The Raiders defeated the Central Coast Roosters 30-28 in round one, in what was a see-sawing affair. The green machine came from behind twice in the match, with a try in the last five minutes by Raiders winger Emmett Smith sealing the win.

There are a couple of changes to the team ahead of this weekend's match. Callum Rossiter has been named at five-eighth, replacing Sam Chapman. Patrick Dawson is the new player on the bench.

The side take on the Roosters, who started their season off with a six point victory over the Eels.

Kick off is at 12pm on Saturday 11th February at Henson Park.
