Monaro Colts Johns & Daley Cup: Round Two Wrap

The Monaro Colts Laurie Daley Cup side claimed their first win of the season while the Andrew Johns Cup side recorded a draw in round two action.

Monaro Colts 40 d Illawarra South Coast Dragons 16

The Monaro Colts bounced back from their opening round loss with a dominant win over the Illawarra South Coast Dragons in Shellharbour on Saturday. 

Hooker Xavier Cacciotti starred for the Colts, scoring an impressive four tries during the match. 

The Colts were first on the scoreboard with Cacciotti scoring a four-pointer in the fifth minute. 

The Dragons were next to score, with Samuel Kennedy going over for a try and  Jackson Rieck converting to put the Dragons ahead 6-4. 

But Monaro were able to hit back, with tries to Lekani Mpaso and Cacciotti giving the visitors a 16-6 lead at the half-time break. 

The Colts continued their momentum into the second half, scoring two straight tries to push their lead out to 28-6. 

Dragons fullback Rieck hit back with a try, before the Colts scored two more to extend their lead to 40-12. 

Dragons winger Darnell Te Ahuru scored a late consolation try, with the final score 40-16. 

The Colts are back at home this weekend, taking on the Western Rams at NSWRL HQ Bruce on Sunday. 

Andrew Johns Cup 

Monaro Colts 20 drew Illawarra South Coast Dragons 20

The Monaro Colts claimed a 20-all draw with the Illawarra South Coast Dragons at Ron Costello Oval in Shellharbour on Saturday.

With the scores locked at 14-all with five minutes of the game remaining, Colts five-eighth and captain Jamie Cowling stepped up and scored a try. Cooper Johnston successfully converted to give Monaro a 20-14 lead with just minutes to go. 

But the Dragons were able to score with a minute to go on the clock through Benjamin Askew. Needing the conversion to secure a draw, Dragons fullback Jack Talbott nailed the kick to claim a 20-20 draw. 

Earlier in the game, the Colts had to come from behind after a fast start by the Dragons saw them jump out to a 12-0 lead after fifteen minutes of play. 

Tries to Hayden Nye, Jet Millard and Cooper Johnston put the Colts ahead 14-12, before a penalty goal by Dragons fullback Talbott levelled the scores at 14-14. 

The Colts take on the Western Rams this Saturday at NSWRL HQ Bruce in round three action.
