NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg Round Three Preview

The Raiders NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg sides will take on the Jets and Sharks respectively as part of a triple-header that will take place at GIO Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides will be hoping to bounce back from tough defeats last weekend as they play in front of a home crowd in Canberra.

NSW Cup

After suffering a 24-18 point loss to the Bears in round two, the NSW Cup side will look to rebound against the Jets who sit at the top of the table after back-to-back wins.

Two early tries from Semi Valemei and Jed Stuart helped the Raiders take a 14-nil lead with just ten minutes left in the second half, however, the Bears fought back scoring 24 unanswered points to eventually win the game.

A big defensive effort will be the Raiders priority if they wish to return to their winning ways, as the Jets have scored 68 points in their opening two games compared to the Raiders 34.

The NSW Cup team have made a few changes ahead of their game against the Jets, with prop Josh Allen replacing Trey Mooney who has been called up to play his second-ever NRL game for the Canberra Raiders.

Joshua James has been named to play five-eighth alongside Brad Schneider, with Matt Frawley being named on the NRL team’s extended bench.

James Schiller will replace Elijah Anderson on the wing with Valemei being shifted to the right centre position and Jarrod Croker filling in at left centre.

Hohepa Puru will look to back up his stellar game against the Bears and lead the team from the front after running for 224 run metres including 69 post-contact metres, and making 36 tackles.

With the Jets defeating the Eels by 30 points last Friday, the Raiders will need to be at the top of their game in front of the green army if they are to claim the two points at home.

The game will kick off at 4:00 pm (AEDT) at GIO Stadium in Canberra with the Raiders vs Sharks NRL match to follow suit at 6:15 pm (AEDT).

Jersey Flegg

The Jersey Flegg Cup side will be taking on the Sharks at 2:15 pm on Sunday at GIO Stadium Canberra.

The Raiders had a fast start against the Roosters last weekend, scoring two tries in the opening four minutes thanks to forward Josh Billing and fullback Chevy Stewart.

Shortly after, the game turned on its head, as the Roosters ran away with the win scoring nine tries against the Raiders finishing 48-16.

The Sharks, who remain undefeated after the first two rounds, will be a fierce opposition for the Raiders who need to tidy up their disciplinary issues conceding 10 penalties, a ruck infringement and a sin bin to Mitchell Prest in their loss to the Roosters.

A couple of changes to the team with Jacob Piper being promoted from the bench to the starting side in the second row, whilst Tate Rhea has also been promoted to start at lock, pushing Jack Hartwig to prop replacing Prest.

In a tight contest to come, the Raiders will need to get off the front foot and stamp their authority on the Sharks if they are to continue their charge towards the top of the table.
