Canberra Raiders Cup 2023: Round 2 Wrap

The second round of the Blumers Lawyers Canberra Raiders Cup was nothing short of entertaining over the weekend, with some dominant wins and a hard-fought comeback.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 40 def Woden Valley Rams 10

This week’s ‘match of the round’ saw the Roos defeat the Woden Valley Rams in a dominant 40-10 victory.

The Queanbeyan side had a dominant start on the road, running in two unanswered tries to take a 12-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes.

Woden fought back in the 30th minute with Sean Maloney scoring their first try of the day down the right side to make it 12-4.

Queanbeyan continued to dominate the game, running in another three unanswered tries to further their lead to 30-4.

Once again the Rams attempted to fight back with winger Thomas Scrivener scoring down the right side. Gideon Afemui successfully converted from the sideline to make it 30-10.

Queanbeyan didn't slow down, running in another two tries with winger Jake Kiely completing his hattrick to lock in a 40-10 victory.

The Rams will look to bounce back next week when they take on the Goulburn City Bulldogs.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers 32 def Goulburn City Bulldogs 30.

It was the Bushies who were victorious over the weekend, coming back from an 18-point deficit to win 32-30 over the Bulldogs.

The Bushies were first on the scoreboard, but it was Goulburn who dominated the first half as they looked to redeem their round one performance.

The home side ran in four tries to the Bushies one, taking a commanding 24-6 lead heading into the break.

The second half was a polar opposite reflection of the first half, with the Bushies fighting back in an attempt to steal the win against the complacent Bulldogs outfit.

The visitors scored five tries in the second half to the Bulldogs one, which saw them secure the late victory with three minutes remaining to win 32-30.

Queanbeyan Blues 34 def Yass Magpies 22.

It was a back-and-forth battle between these two sides in Queanbeyan, with the home side coming out on top in a 34-22 victory.

It was Yass who scored first, with Aublix Tawha crossing over the line in the sixth minute to give his side a 4-nil lead.

The Blues fought back to take a 22-14 lead heading into the break after finding some momentum and scoring four tries.

Much like the first half, both sides fought hard scoring two more tries a piece.

Yass attempted to fight back but it was the Blues who won the battle in the end, defeating the Magpies 34-22.

West Belconnen Warriors 36 def Gungahlin Bulls 22.

The Gungahlin Bulls now sit in last position after back-to-back losses to start their 2023 season after being defeated by the Warriors 36-22 in a dramatic clash.

West Belconnen ran in four unanswered tries to take a 24-0 lead in the 30th minute.

Tempers began to boil with a high tackle from Gungahlin’s Jason Brown resulting in a sin bin five minutes before the break.

The drama did not stop there with Bulls half Bobby Roberts also getting sent to the sin bin due to descent in the final minute of the first half.

The Bulls began to fight back, and it was clear they wanted to prove their worth in the second half but it was not enough.

In the second half the Bulls scored four tries to the Warriors two, but unfortunately it was too little, too late, losing 36-22 at home.
