NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg Round 17 Wrap

Round 17 action saw two hard-fought games for our NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg sides, with the Cup side recording a tight eight-point win.

NSW Cup

On Saturday, the Raiders NSW Cup team took down the Sydney Roosters 30 – 22 at Wentworth Park.

A double by winger Xavier Savage helped get his side get over the top in what was a see-sawing affair.

The Raiders opened the scoring early, with Xavier Savage crossing over in the fourth minute. Brad Schneider successfully converted the try giving the Raiders a 6 – 0 lead.

Raiders’ penalties set the stage for the hosts to strike back through Penioni Tohi in the 24th minute. Coby Thomas missed the conversion, leaving the score at 6 – 4.

The Raiders scored two quick tries before halftime through Ata Mariota and Brad Schneider to extend their lead to 18 – 4.

The Roosters came out of half-time firing with Coby Thomas scoring the first try of the half. Thomas converted his try to reduce the lead to 18 – 10.

The Roosters used their new-found momentum to score another two tries through Corey Ross and Riley Meyn to take a 22 – 18 lead with nine minutes remaining.

However, the Raiders were quick to respond as Chevy Stewart scored in the 73rd minute. Brad Schneider was successful with the boot to give his side 24 – 22.

Xavier Savage put the nail in the coffin as he scored right before the final whistle to extend the Raiders’ lead. Brad Schneider converted his fifth try of the day to make the score 30 – 22.

The Raiders will host the Panthers at GIO Stadium Canberra next Saturday afternoon.

Jersey Flegg 

The Raiders suffered a hard-fought 24 – 14 loss to the Sydney Roosters at Wentworth Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Raiders got on the board first as winger Kane Rushton scored in the corner to give the visitors a 4 – 0 lead.

The hosts retaliated, scoring through Braith Alexander and Cassius Tia to take a 12 – 4 lead in the 30th minute.

Toby Thorburn narrowed the margin by scoring a try right before halftime making it 12 – 10.

The Raiders came out of the sheds firing, scoring in the opening minutes of the second half through Kane Rushton to take a 14 -12 lead.

The Roosters struck back with three consecutive tries to secure a 24 – 14 lead with 15 minutes remaining.

Canberra will take on the Penrith Panthers at GIO Stadium Canberra on Saturday.
