The Toyota Forklift Raiders are supporting the free evidence-based Sleep Ninja® app through our partnership with Black Dog Institute (BDI).
We know that half of all mental illnesses start during early high school by the age of 14. And at this critical stage of development, 40% of young people will face significant sleep problems, which can heighten their risk of anxiety or depression later in life.
Leaders in youth mental health research, Black Dog Institute, wanted to address this challenge. So commencing in 2016, their researchers began co-designing an app with young people, their parents/carers, psychologists, counsellors and sleep experts to help improve sleep in teens.
This resulted in the development of Sleep Ninja, a smartphone app designed and shown to be effective in improving the quality of sleep and reducing symptoms of depression in young people aged 12-16.
Raiders NRLW Player Ash Quinlan was happy to be a part of the video.
“We know the significance of sleep and the effects it can have on our performance," Quinlan said.
"By addressing good quality sleep, we are setting up the foundations to promote emotional, social and physical wellbeing and academic performance, now and in the future.
"It is the first adolescent-focused app which helps young people improve their sleep. It’s free to use and backed by research.”
Over six weeks, Sleep Ninja acts as a coach, teaching skills based on cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) in a fun and engaging way. The app leads young people through six training sessions that:
- Educate them about the role of sleep.
- Helps them become aware of habits that contribute to poor sleep (for example, sleep environment, daytime routine, bedtime routine).
- Teaches them behavioural and cognitive strategies to change unhelpful sleep patterns setting up the foundations to promote emotional, social, and physical wellbeing.
