Team of the Year 2023: Halfback

Congratulations to Sam Williams of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos for his selection at halfback in the 2023 Canberra Raiders Cup Team of the Year.

Williams’ first full season in the Canberra Raiders Cup is best described as flawless.

Sam was appointed captain-coach in 2023 and led his side through a dominant regular season which saw the Roos comfortably earn the minor premiership, only dropping one game.

Recognised for his formidable performances and leadership, Williams took out the 2023 Best & Fairest Les McIntyre Medal, as well as the Don Furner Snr Shield as the CRC Coach of the Year.

Williams and the Roos went on to cap off a brilliant year, lifting the 2023 Canberra Raiders Cup after an assertive 34-6 grand final win against the Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

The experienced halfback finished the regular season as the competitions top point scorer, picking up 6 tries and kicking 102 goals in 19 games, racking up a total of 230 points, 90 points clear of the second highest point scorer.

The Cooma Colts junior and former Canberra Raider joined the Roos mid-way through last year which saw the team improve immensely and only just miss out on finals.

With effectively the same side, the Roos carried momentum into 2023 and proceeded with the outstanding season they've had.

After a highly decorated first full CRC season and debut year as captain-coach, the CRRL are excited to see what Sam Williams can bring to the table in the coming years.
