The University of Canberra (UC) Stars rugby league club is looking for players with all levels of experience to join their women’s tackle team in 2024.

Newly appointed coach Stuart McLennan, who recently guided the Greek women’s team to victories in the European Championships and the Balkan Cup, encouraged ladies in Canberra to “give UC a go” if they are thinking of playing rugby league.

“Even if you have never played rugby league before we would love to have you in our team.

“I had a brief stint at UC in 2020 and was impressed with the culture and friendly atmosphere at the club. It is one big family and while we do have players from UC and ANU you don’t have to be a student to join.

“My number one priority is for everyone to have fun and enjoy this great sport. After that it is about  building skills and team development. Hopefully we can pick up a few wins along the way because that always makes it more enjoyable.”

UC Stars President TJ Cox said 2024 will be a year to remember for UC Stars as the club celebrates their 15 year anniversary. She is very focused on continuing to build on the strong club culture and nurturing an extended family and support system, particularly for university students who may be new to Canberra or the game of rugby league.

“As the President, I am invested in rebuilding our women’s tackle team who are an integral part of our club and our future, particularly as we celebrate our 15 year anniversary. There is a huge focus on women in rugby league from the NRL all the way down to community sport and as a female myself I am even more passionate about growing the game and supporting pathways for women in rugby league. We are looking for players at all levels to join our women’s tackle team and learn new skills, make new friends and have fun.”

Player Maggie Wright started with the club in 2021 and has found her home at the Stars.

“I have always loved rugby league and when I got the opportunity to play in Canberra it was awesome.

“I love playing for the Stars because they are good people, we play hard and party hard. When we mix together at training it’s good to get amongst it.”
