Boorowa to host Binalong under lights
A massive Round Four of the Blumers Lawyers 2024 George Tooke Shield competition kicks off tonight ahead of this weekend's celebration of country Rugby League.
Playing under lights, Boorowa hosts Binalong at Boorowa Showground before North Canberra visits Harden, and Bungendore takes on the visiting Cootamundra Bulldogs on Saturday.
Then, on Sunday, rounding out a big three days, Crookwell hosts their Devils Day when welcoming the travelling UC Stars.
Still, all eyes will be on tonight's big GTS men’s tackle clash between the Rovers and Brahmans.
Boorowa will enter the contest as the reigning premiers, while the returning Binalong is undefeated through three rounds and shape as a major player in 2024.
Only 30km separate the two communities, and Boorowa president Chris McIntosh said the Rovers would be ready to welcome their closest rivals.
“It won’t be a very friendly welcome,” McIntosh laughed.
“Still, it’s great to see Binalong back in the competition. They are our closest neighbours, and we always enjoy playing against them.
“There is always a lot of the guys that have grown up playing against each other through junior footy, and it’s a game we both want to win.”
The GTS league tag game kicks the evening off at 6.30 pm before the men’s tackle match at 7.30 pm, and McIntosh explained that a big night of Rugby League would warm the town up for a big weekend and the annual Boorowa Picnic Race Club meeting on Saturday.
“We should get a good crowd there as tomorrow (Saturday) is our Picnic race day, and we always get a crowd there,” he said.
“There will be a lot of people around for the races who will get down there, and it will be a great way for people to start their weekend off with a bit of good country footy before the races.”
The evening will double as sponsor’s night, with the Rovers taking a moment to thank those local businesses that support the club.
“We’re having sponsors' night up there, and they’ll come up at 5 pm and 5.30 pm and get fed and watered. The teams will go straight upstairs after their games and do the 3-2-1 with the sponsors,” McIntosh said.
“Even though many of the sponsors do it out of the goodness of their hearts, it’s great to give them a night to thank them for their support.”
