Team of the Year 2024: Wingers

Congratulations to Connor Massen (Belconnen United Sharks) and Koko Salim (Woden Valley Rams) for their selection on the wings in the 2024 Canberra Raiders Cup Team of the Year.

#2 - Connor Massen (Belconnen United Sharks)

A key recruit for the Sharks in 2024, Connor Massen proved to be a valuable signing.

After a few injury-riddled years, Massen returned to the competition in style, scoring 11 tries in 14 games and playing a pivotal role in Belconnen’s push for back-to-back finals appearances.

The stocky winger always put his hand up to take the tough hit-ups, gaining crucial metres coming out of his own end.

Along with his strength, Massen’s speed on the edge made him a constant threat, often seen charging down the sideline.

He stepped up in big games, especially against the Rams, where he was the Sharks’ only try scorer in both regular season matchups, including a decisive try in their 4-0 round 15 win. He also scored a crucial try in finals week one, though the Sharks narrowly fell short 22-20.

Despite not reaching the preliminary final like they did last year, the club has shown consistency with consecutive top four finishes, off the back of strong recruitment, including Massen.

#5 - Koko Salim (Woden Valley Rams)

At just 19 years old, Koko Salim made significant impact in his first full season of first grade, playing a key role in the Rams’ top four finish.

Scoring 15 tries in 17 games, the speedy and powerful winger was a constant threat on the edge.

Salim scored plenty of highlight-reel worthy tries, often seen beating defenders on the edge or diving athletically to score in the corners.

He delivered in the big moments, with a crucial double in their 22-20 semi-final win over the Sharks and another try in the preliminary final.

Salim’s debut first grade season shows he has a bright future ahead in rugby league.
